The Disabled People of Kwa-Thema
(DPKT) is a registered non-profit organisation dedicated
to promote the interest and to protect the rights of
the people with disabilities in Kwa-Thema in Ekurhuleni
Metropole and the neighbouring areas. The organisation
runs a
range of programs
that have been specially designed to empower members
and the communities, with a knowledge and the skills
to address unemployment and alleviate poverty.
DPKT was established in 1997 and has over 54 members
with different disabilities and illnesses; physically
disabled, mentally handicapped, blind, deaf, people
who are epileptic, quadriplegic, postpolio and chest
cancer - among others. The organisation is affiliated
to the Disabled People of South Africa and is a partner
of the national Arrive Alive campaign; aimed to prevent
more disabilities caused by road accidents.
